Scandinavian Christmas traditions seen through vintage photos

Scandinavian Christmas traditions are very much inspired by the darkness of the winter and the importance of staying at home with the family. The high point is not Christmas Day, but Christmas Eve in Scandinavia where the family is gathered together for Christmas dinner. The preparations for the big day last throughout December, but not as much as a small cookie is to be enjoyed before Christmas Eve. Baking, making food, making gifts and wrapping them in, cleaning the house and writing cards is all part of the December activities, whilst we quietly enjoy the time of Advent.

These nostalgic vintage Christmas photos, found in the Norwegian Digital Museum, illustrates what Scandinavian Christmas traditions are all about: A joyous time for family and lots of excitement for the children.
