Fork magazine, food inspiration for the family

We love food, we love cooking and we love the Fork Magazine.
This issue is the largest ever. After a winter of root vegetables and slow-cooked meaty stews, the first signs of spring indicate a lighter, fresher approach to cooking as we look forward to the appearance of the first asparagus, wild garlic and peas.

But as we enter spring, there is still a nip in the air, so comforting dishes such as Riverford’s bacon, leek and potato gratin will hit the spot perfectly.
Fork is also packed with wine recommendations, baking tutorials as well as fishing and sausage making.
This issue also sees the first of their regular grow-your-own columns. More and more people are growing their own vegetables at home, and this is a trend that we will see get bigger and bigger this year, as people try to save money, but also want to know exactly where their food comes from.
This is a great magazine to inspire you to do more cooking at home. We think it inspires us to cook as a family. And why not use the weekend to go shopping with the kids at the butcher, fish monger and at at the vegetable marked, prepare and cook together in the kitchen and eat together. There’s nothing tasting so delicious as a healthy homemade dish.

So find your aprons and get ready -what are you cooking together this weekend?

Oh, how I wished the girls School would consider allowing something else than only water in the drink bottles for lunch, especially on a wet and grey day like this! Healthy, cold and miserable or unhealthy, warm and happy… You choose!

Retro owls and lunch boxes

Owls had their big comeback as a design trend in 2006 and it appears that the wise little creatures have some staying power.
Norwegian Blafre Design summer news as shown here.

I don’t know what you think but I find owls both interesting and calming.
Owls may seem like a rather random design trend, but actually, the wise motif goes back several decades to the 1960′s.

Owls, retro colours and prints -who can resist these lunch boxes?
Oh, and there is matching water bottles too!

School dinners or packed lunch?

Amélie started school this September, in reception. And as Beatrice already was at the school and had school dinners we knew it was freshly made on the premises and served warm to the students.
But Amélie can be a bit fuzzy with what she eats. She also needs a lot of time, which they don’t have in school. And then when she always came hungry home from school we decided to send packed lunch with her, just to see if that would suit her better.
In Norway most children would have packed lunch at school. It usually consists of wholemeal or rye bread with cheese, ham or salami. And perhaps a yoghurt as well. The Norwegian schools often provide milk and fruit. Crisps are regarded as “sweets” and is strictly forbidden.
Amélie sometimes feels her packed lunch is a bit boring compared to her lunch buddies who have their lunchboxes filled with croissants, doughnuts etc. So we were thinking it might would help with a bit more fancy lunch box and water bottle.
In Norway there is a company called Blafre Design that makes retro lunchboxes, and they are so cute!
I think Amélie would be more happy with her rye bread with ham and cheese if it came in a box like this
