Online shop with soul and atmosphere

Lille Figaro is one of our favourite shops with lot’s of chic fashion and design. The founder of Lille Figaro Rikke lives in Denmark with her husband and three children, Frederikke Lucie 6 years, Karl Gustav 4 years and Alberte Lucie 1 ½ year.

Little Scandinavian met up with Rikke to chat about fashion, design, online shopping and motherhood.

Tell us a little bit about Lille Figaro -what is your inspiration?
After becoming a mother myself I’ve been a frequent user of online shopping as time is limited compared to the “before children life”. But somehow online shopping didn’t give me the same experience as in store, there was something missing -like soul, atmosphere and the actual good feeling you get from shopping in a physical store. That’s what inspired me to wanting to create an online shop with not only a great selection of designer clothes and lifestyle products but also a shop with identity with it’s own soul and atmosphere. I want the customers to feel welcomed and it should be a exciting experience to shop in Lille Figaro -although it’s online. Lille Figaro is a dream of creating my own concept store that now finally has come true.

How do you select the brands and styles? What is important to you when choosing what to stock?
The brands and styles that are in the shop are chosen with special care. I choose with my heart and you’ll find nothing in the shop I would not buy myself. Lille Figaro is the best choice for the fashionable, discerning and not least busy mum or dad who can find a lot of delicious hand-picked items for their children in one single store. We also wanted to share the true modern Scandinavian lifestyle with offering more than children’s fashion, we recommend checking out what’s on offer under our category Goodies for Mum with everything from gorgeous printed jumpsuits, beautiful beaded bags and jewelery to organic skincare for you and your child and our handpicked interior accessories.

Do you want to share your favourite picks from the Spring Summer 2011 collection with us?
For the girls I simply love the amazing ITI tunic dress with contrast fringes by Petitbo, the beautiful Havana tutu dress in creme by Wovenplay and the matching feather hairband also by Wovenplay. Another favourite is the clean and simple cherry t-shirt dress by Bobo Choses that can be worn in so many ways. A lot of the clothes are unisex and can be worn by either girls or boys. But in particular for the boys my favourites must be for the baby boy the sleeveless baby onepiece with sailboat print by Bobo Choses, so simple and I love the colour. Another great item is the super soft and cool Beetle tee by Soft Gallery, the loose fit stripy shorts in dirty white and black also by Soft Gallery is another must have this summer for the boys, and the dark green parka by Popupshop will take your little one trough rainy and windy days and long into the autumn.

Meet Helene from Barnyardkids

We are about to explore different independent shops offering Scandinavian children’s fashion.
First up is Barnyardkids, a UK based online shop offering childrens clothes for 0-6 years olds by Scandinavian designer labels Mini Rodini, Smafolk, Katvig, Ej Sikke Lej, Duns, Urban Elk, Ida T, Moccis, Molo and Name It. We met up with lovely Helene from BarnyardKids last week to find out more.

Helene with her son, Sterling.

Little Scandinavian: What was the background for starting up Barnyard Kids and when did it all happen?

Helene: Barnyardkids formed in June 2008 and began trading in November 2008. My son Sterling was born in September 2007 and I quickly discovered a lack of good clothes for babies and young children. After a bit of research, I decided there was a gap in the market for good quality, cool and fun clothes, so decided to launch my own business. Although I’ve lived in England for 20 years, I was born and brought up in Sweden, so was instinctively drawn to Scandinavia for the brands I wanted to offer. By the way, ‘barn’ in Swedish means ‘child’ hence the name ‘barnyardkids’.

Little Scandinavian: How do you select the brands and styles? What is important to you?

Helene: Barnyardkids only stock Scandinavian brands and have an extensive collection from popular brands like Smafolk, Katvig and Ej sikke lej, and a selection of our favourite pieces from lesser-known brands such as Urban Elk and Duns Sweden. Initially it was important to stock clothes that are organic or oeko-tex certified, but we’ve had to compromise when we got Molo Kids and Name-It onboard as they are not organic, but we love their clothes. And the fact they’re Scandinavian!

Little Scandinavian: Do you want to share your favourite picks from the Spring Summer 2011 collection with us? What made you choose these items and are there any strong trends and exciting news we should be aware of for this season?

Helene: Regarding trends for 2011, denim is making a big comeback and will be popular this year. This prompted us to get Name It onboard as they make really cool affordable denim. The Katvig SS11 collection is very strong and selling well, the quality is even better than normal. Mini Rodini are as cool as ever, and Molo Kids have produced some great new t-shirts for this season. Smafolk continue with their fun retro prints; the owl and cow prints are big sellers at the moment, and their car, digger and animal prints are always popular.

Little Scandinavian: Thank you Helene and we wish you and your family a very Happy Spring and Easter!

Helene’s favourite picks for Spring Summer 2011

House of Kids, behind the scenes

How you ever wondered what it looks like behind the scenes of an online shop?

House of Kids started up only a few years ago in 2005 by Helle Guldmann and is today one of the leading online shops within children’s clothing, shoes, accessories and toys. They stock an impressive selection of Scandinavian designer brands with all things needed for children 0 – 12y.
We think this online shop is very user friendly, easy to navigate around and find what you are looking for. We have also previously talked about House of Kids’s excellent use of social media and how well they communicate with their customers. They also provide excellent customer service which is supported by TrustPilot where House of Kids currently have a 9.2/10 rating by customers. Visit houseofkids.dk and see what you think.

Anyway; This is what it looks like behind the scenes

Drappa Dot AW10 a folklore fairytale

The beautiful prints and fabrics that are so typical for the Danish children’s fashion brand Drappa Dot, are almost like an invitation to a dream world of myths and fairy tales. It is silk and cotton, it is flowers and fairy tale prints, it is details and rich embroideries. All mixed with modern silhouettes and feminine colors. Here the folklore mixes with the princess in clothes that can be perfect both for everyday life and the upcoming holiday season. Also new this season is that Drappa Dot uses the network of the new owners behind the brand to turn the collection organic. We like!

Drappa Dot is available in the UK at two lovely independent shops Bibi Klamer or House of Allegra.

Ewa i Walla Autumn Winter 2010

Ewa i Walla is a Swedish fashion design company for adult and children’s fashion. It was funded in early 1990. The clothes have a sense of romance, haute couture and countryside chic.
Natural fabrics such as cotton, linen, silk and wool constitute the base in the collections and are mixed and matched in the most unusual way. This Autumn Winter 2010 collection is no exception. We love the checked dress and skirt with tons of layers and fabric, the knitted items and the nostalgic woolen coat -enjoy!

Ewa I Walla is planning to release their own online shop, containing previous collections to bargain price. It’s supposed to be ready any time, so stay tuned!
