Passion for fashion with an alternative to French classicism

Nordinary is a online shop based in France. Nordinary have a cool, funky and fun collection of many of our Scandinavian favourite brands like Mala, Smafolk, Moonkids, Gren Cotton, Duns Sweden, Hollys and many more. They also have a great selection of all things needed to create a perfect children’s nursery -with a Scandinavian touch; Sebra, Ferm Living and Maileg to name a few.
We had a chat with Estelle, the founder of Nordinary to hear a bit more about this lovely Scandinavian oase. Estelle is pictured below, on the beach in 1976. www.nordinary.fr
Tell us a little bit about you and how your wonderful online shop, Nordinary was conceived.
I worked for several years as a journalist for a big French newspaper, especially in the fashion section. Topics covered in fashion were not always my taste, very classic, preppy, boring for me whose tastes are diametrically opposed. I dreamed of colors, comfortable original materials and a more environmentally friendly conception than mercantile way of thinking.
The birth of my daughter Adelaide was the ingredient that I needed to apply my passion for fashion with an alternative to French classicism. Scandinavian style so quickly imposed itself to me. It was over relatively unknown at the time which encouraged me to take the lead.

How do you select the clothes, what’s the Nordinary style?
I go several times a year in Scandinavia. Priority to Copenhagen where I attend two major trade shows for fashion trends Ciffkids and CphKids. I draw many of my inspirations there. But my best discoveries are those that I can found in small shop on rides in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Aarhus.
Scandinavia is full of young designers who are not necessarily represented in the fairs. So my choice is directed primarily towards the creators unknown in France. They must be colorful, comfortable and Oeko-tex as much as possible. The price is also important. I also think of the child who will wear the garment. He must be happy to put it on, to show to his friends. For babies and toddlers, all-over prints are a real source of pleasure. They act like a giant picture book that awakens and enchants them!

And finally, what’s your favourite picks for the summer? Any strong trends?
In Mala, I love their happy print that puts you in a good mood. We feel that children are comfortable and chic at the time. Nothing complex about these basics, you just put it with a simple gesture. It also helps the autonomy of smaller.
Regarding our deco selection, Sebra and Ferm Living are our two favorites. The joy and colors continues inside bed. We fell in love for the colorful printed highlights of the new collection from Sebra. The cars that reminds us, parents, when we play thousand milestones (a French card game), and caring little owls to keep the sleeping girls!
Ferm Living is spoiling us with all its sweet and original organic pillows and soon some extra especially for moms!
To celebrate the arrival of warm weather, Nordinary choose to invite circus animal and festive decor. We also look forward to the small UV swimwear from Smafolk and flowered dresses of Duns Sweden!
For mums, we have also a new selection made for her with Scandinavian designers like Danefae and Hjorth. Raincoat, skirt, dress and pants in a high quality and with this Nordic touch that we love!

House of Kids got it right with 13.175 likes

We mentioned House of Kids already almost a year ago, with their brilliant understanding of Social Media. The danish online shop strikes us again with how they use Social Media for what it’s worth. Down to the smallest detail. Like uploading 3 perfect resized pictures with capturing colours and a clear message, that FB displays so it looks like a paid advert. Here’s a screen shot.

(Online lager salg means online outlet sale.)

House of Kids asks; press like if you want us to do a Facebook competition tomorrow. Within 12 hours 814 customers have pressed like.
They launch a poll by saying, press like on the SS11 news from Smafolk, and we’ll know what’s the most popular item. So far the bright, fun and gorgeous baby short bodysuits are both in the lead.

By pressing like on pictures and comments the 13.175 will tell all the friends they are connected with about House of Kids. Word by mouth, we say no more.
Of course it’s not only about social media. It’s about offering a great selection of kids fashion, have the sizes in stock, provide excellent customer services, fast shipping combined with a reassuring return policy. Only they do that too! www.houseofkids.dk

Meet Helene from Barnyardkids

We are about to explore different independent shops offering Scandinavian children’s fashion.
First up is Barnyardkids, a UK based online shop offering childrens clothes for 0-6 years olds by Scandinavian designer labels Mini Rodini, Smafolk, Katvig, Ej Sikke Lej, Duns, Urban Elk, Ida T, Moccis, Molo and Name It. We met up with lovely Helene from BarnyardKids last week to find out more.

Helene with her son, Sterling.

Little Scandinavian: What was the background for starting up Barnyard Kids and when did it all happen?

Helene: Barnyardkids formed in June 2008 and began trading in November 2008. My son Sterling was born in September 2007 and I quickly discovered a lack of good clothes for babies and young children. After a bit of research, I decided there was a gap in the market for good quality, cool and fun clothes, so decided to launch my own business. Although I’ve lived in England for 20 years, I was born and brought up in Sweden, so was instinctively drawn to Scandinavia for the brands I wanted to offer. By the way, ‘barn’ in Swedish means ‘child’ hence the name ‘barnyardkids’.

Little Scandinavian: How do you select the brands and styles? What is important to you?

Helene: Barnyardkids only stock Scandinavian brands and have an extensive collection from popular brands like Smafolk, Katvig and Ej sikke lej, and a selection of our favourite pieces from lesser-known brands such as Urban Elk and Duns Sweden. Initially it was important to stock clothes that are organic or oeko-tex certified, but we’ve had to compromise when we got Molo Kids and Name-It onboard as they are not organic, but we love their clothes. And the fact they’re Scandinavian!

Little Scandinavian: Do you want to share your favourite picks from the Spring Summer 2011 collection with us? What made you choose these items and are there any strong trends and exciting news we should be aware of for this season?

Helene: Regarding trends for 2011, denim is making a big comeback and will be popular this year. This prompted us to get Name It onboard as they make really cool affordable denim. The Katvig SS11 collection is very strong and selling well, the quality is even better than normal. Mini Rodini are as cool as ever, and Molo Kids have produced some great new t-shirts for this season. Smafolk continue with their fun retro prints; the owl and cow prints are big sellers at the moment, and their car, digger and animal prints are always popular.

Little Scandinavian: Thank you Helene and we wish you and your family a very Happy Spring and Easter!

Spring news for Småfolk (Little People)

Danish Småfolk (means Little people in danish) is such a well known and established brand in the UK so it might surprise you that it was founded only 5 years ago. Their use of vibrant colours knows no boundaries as their kid’s clothes throw all the rules out the window in pursuit of memorable outfits. They almost operate under the mantra that colours can’t clash if they are gorgeous enough. Småfolk love bold colours and prints that make you sit up and take notice! Created for children that want to be noticed, their collections of clothes are anything but dull with patterns that little ones are likely to remember for the rest of their lives…

Their new spring collection is packed with all the stuff you always find in a Småfolk Collection – T-shirts, pants, dresses and lots of baby clothes. But there are also plenty of news like several new dress and sweatshirt models, rainwear and rubber boots in two new colors and their popular bedding in a cream colored background throughout the 8 colors.

Little people! Get ready for lots of beautiful spring experiences with Småfolk!
