Wool and kids, a chat with Danish children’s shop owner in Hackney

This morning we headed to Hoxton to meet Anna, a Danish mum and entrepreneur -and to try out the award winning* Swedish bakery Fabrique. Sadly the bakery was closed on Mondays, but we did meet up with Anna and together we headed to another nice Hackney eatery, Bagel for coffee and freshly baked pastries. And for a chat about wool.

Anna, a mum of Emil age 2 has lived in London for more than 15 years. She’s originally from Denmark but settled here with husband and a career as a photographer. But after having their firstborn, Anna found it a challenge to get hold of proper wool clothes for her child. In Scandinavia we are spoilt for choice. So one would think that in a large city like London, also with a climate similar to Denmark with cold and wet winters, that there would be a decent selection of kidswear in wool available. But truth is it’s far between shops that sell any wool clothing at all. This was what prompted Anna to enter the wool business.

Anna then decided to found an online shop, called MamaOwl, selling natural baby and kids clothes for newborn and up to age 7. And we’ve only seen the beginning of the shop, launched in November 2012. There will be lots more exciting brands in store, especially from August 2013. We had a quick browse now and found already in store desirable essentials like wool silk tee and singlets, and very reasonably priced I must ad.
Scandinavian mums dress their children in wool from early autumn and throughout Spring. An inner layer of pure wool helps to regulate your child’s temperature, it warms when it’s cold and cools when it’s hot, explains Anna. And I agree. My girls would often have a soft wool singlet underneath their school uniform. So soft and gentle on sensitive skin as well.

Why Wool? By Vibeke Kvam Johansen from Ella’s Wool

Norwegian Vibeke Kvam Johansen is living with her family in New York. After experiencing the cold winters she sat up the online shop Ella’s Wool, specialising in children’s clothes -in wool. So, what’s so great about merino and alpaca wool?

Rooted in Norway, a country known for its challenging climate, Ella’s Wool offers a range of clothing for babies and children that meet the requirement of the most demanding parents in the world. We have chosen high quality wool known for its incredible softness and comfort because it does not itch at all. Only the best for our little loved ones!

No man-made fiber has ever managed to take the place of soft wool in the heart of the Norwegian people. Here is why:

1 It’s warm and cozy
Like wool in general, our wool keeps you warm. There is no need for your children to wear multiple layers of cotton and synthetics, leaving them no room to move and play. Equipping your little ones with a merino base layer directly on the skin is the most important step to let them benefit fully from the exceptional warming qualities of wool. In addition, wool from merino sheep is known for its incredible softness and its non-itch quality, so it’s ideal even for babies’ sensitive skin. On extra cold days, a second, thicker layer can be used to lock in a maximum of heat.

2 It works like a natural air conditioner for your body
Wool is not only suitable for freezing cold winter days. In fact, it’s a naturally heat regulating fabric, meaning that you can wear your merino garments in any weather conditions and be sure to feel perfectly comfortable. This is one of the reasons why wool is recommended for babies, since they are unable to express whether they’re feeling too cold or too warm.

3 It regulates moisture
On cold and rainy days you normally get wet, and on warm days you might break a sweat. The good thing about wearing wool is that the material is able to absorb moisture while letting you feel dry and comfortable. In Norway, we know that for our kids to stay healthy when spending time outdoors, they should wear wool. Cotton is to be avoided because when moist, it will cling to your body like a cold and heavy sheet.

4 It’s water resistant
What if the weather forecast calls for light rain? Then you can benefit from another virtue of merino wool, namely that it has a water repellent effect. In other words, you can brush the raindrops off your sweater before the water gets the time to soak into the wool. The fabric is also considerably stain resistant, which makes merino clothes particularly useful for toddlers.

5 It’s odor resistant
Another remarkable quality of wool is that it’s odor-repellent. Even after wearing a merino shirt multiple times, it will still feel clean and fresh.

6 It’s flame retardant
When it comes to our kids, safety is our highest priority. As opposed to many synthetic fabrics, merino wool is naturally flame retardant, and doesn’t melt when exposed to fire.

7 It’s got stretch, it’s crease resistant and it’s durable
The merino fiber has got natural stretch, it doesn’t need ironing and it’s super durable. In other words, merino clothing last a long time without showing much signs of tear and wear. In Norwegian families, merino wool garments are often passed on from sibling to sibling as they grow out of them.

8 It provides a natural sunscreen
Our skin is constantly exposed to UV light when outdoors, even when wearing clothes. However, merino wool provides a good sun protection compared to other fabrics, which is especially beneficial to a baby’s sensitive skin.

9 It’s easy to care for
All underwear from Ella’s Wool can be machine washed. And while the thicker items are hand wash only, they can be worn many times between each washing. Simply hang them to air! Perspiration will evaporate and bacteria are in any case not attracted to stay on the scaly surface of merino fibers.

10 It’s sustainable
Caring for our kids’ future also implies caring for the planet. When choosing merino wool, you’re being environmentally friendly, because it’s a renewable, recyclable and biodegradable natural fiber.

Warming Wool for Children during a frosty Winter

Children and wool was part of my inspiration to start up this blog. In Scandinavia the children are dressed in wool throughout the colder months to keep dry and warm. And even though the UK is wet, windy and cold during Autumn and Winter, with temperatures dropping to sub zero, whilst the arctic winds sweeps trough the country, the children would be dressed in cotton and artificial fleece to keep warm.
Knowing the benefits of a natural material like wool and also having experienced the super soft qualities of Merino and Alpaca wool in addition to beautiful silk wool blends and wool fleece we have available nowadays, it would a shame not to share it.

In Scandinavia wool is a large part of every child’s winter wardrobe. And it’s not only the hat and scarf that is in the warming material. Most importantly is what’s next to skin; underwear, tee and tights. There’s also a wonderful selection of knitted jumpers, beautiful dresses and funky knitted trousers, There’s socks and baby booties, hooded coats and ponchos, baby sleeping bags, blankets and toys -all in wool.

In the UK it seems hard to find wool clothes for children. In Scandinavia most childrenswear shop would have a dedicated wool section. Changing the way parents dress their children, or opening up to new materials (when all the parents can remember is acrylic jumpers and itchy wool) is not happening over night. But importnat evnets like the Wool Week, supported by HRH the Prince of Wales, is trending. And there’s lovely blog inspiration via sites Wool Rocks, to get you started on your own wool project. However, with a slightly limited crafty talent, we love sites like MorMor that provides home knits -if you don’t master the knitting pins yourself. And as wool is trending, more and more International shops are not only including but specialsing in wool; Mayamin London, Ella’s Wool New York, The Island Wool Company, Faroe Island Next time you’re shopping for kids clothes, check the tag -look out for wool!

The Faroe Island literally means Sheep Islands. It’s located between the Norwegian Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean and is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. The knitting tradition in the Faroes goes back centuries. And more recently the traditional patterns and techniques have got a more contemporary twist taking Faroese knitwear to the forefront of Nordic fashion. The iconic Sarah Lund knit jumper from the cult TV drama The Killing is from the Faroe Island, made by Guðrun & Guðrun from Sirri wool.

Love wool, love Woolland

It’s wool week in the UK, 15 – 21 October hosted by the Campaign for Wool. This is a international event, also taking place in the Scandinavian countries as they have a strong tradition of using wool in fashion. Use of wool in fashion is probably so popular because of the colder months, very much similar to tho the UK (with temperatures sinking to Arctic conditions). Several shops in Norway sell only one thing; Wool!
The Norwegian concept store Woolland, was founded in 2011 by three women with a passion for wool and a desire to create soft wool in a beautiful design, suitable for everyday wear.

Having experienced many a cold day with their children having to wear wool and thermal underwear all day, they got the idea to make underwear in a slightly different way; Finished with unusual and cool details, yet in subtle and delicate colors this is essential base layer, beautiful enough to be worn on its own.
The Woolland collection includes baby from age 0 to 2, children age 3 – 8, tweens and teens age 9 – 14 and adults.
Available from the online shop woolland.no and in a Woolland shop at Lilleaker, Norway.

The Campaign for Wool is a global community of sheep farmers, retailers, designers, manufacturers and consumers united by our patron His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales.
The Campaign for Wool aims to educate as many people as possible about the incredible benefits and versatility of wool in fashion, furnishings and everyday life. This in turn, supports many small businesses and local farmers whose livelihoods depend on the wool industry.

As We Grow, a sustainable story from Iceland.

On my recent trip to Copenhagen I was very excited over discovering a new children’s wear brand from Iceland, featuring knits in Alpaca wool for baby and children up to 4 years. The brand As We Grow is inspired by a true story;

Carolyn in Amsterdam had this sweater for her son Julian in 2003. Then she passed it on to her friend Tinna on Iceland, for her son Tryggvi. It was then handed down to Isafold. In the winter of 2006 it got lost but reappeared in the spring, when the snow melted… After a wash it was back on as Isafold’s favourite sweater. Sadly outgrown by 2008 it was handed down to Markus who used it almost daily until it was given to Kjartan Ragnar his cousin. (I believe Kjartan Ragnar is the beautiful blonde boy in the photos.) And well done if you managed to follow this knitted sweater’s journey!

After 9 years 5 different owners the sweater is today one of the favourite garments of little Kjartan Ragnar living in Iceland. Carolyn’s son Julian, the original owner is now 14 years old and lives in New York. The sweater, still warm and beautiful, and its story has been the main inspiration for As We Grow sustainable collection of warm and comfortable children’s clothes.
